Long before designing the Indian National Flag, a young Pingali Venkayya served as a British-Indian Army soldier during the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa (1899–1902). It was on those distant battlefields that he first crossed paths with Mahatma Gandhi—sparking a lifelong admiration that, two decades later, led Gandhiji to entrust him with the design of the symbol of our freedom.
